Rare-Breed Wool from the Mountains of Epirus
Our rare-breed carpets represent a premium tier of production, preserving the indigenous heritage flock populations of Greece whilst delivering exceptional fibre characteristics unattainable through commercial wool sourcing. Each piece honours conservation and tells the story of endangered sheep breeds that have grazed the Epirotic highlands for centuries.
These are not artificial scarcities. Our rare-breed production is constrained by genuine agronomic and supply-chain realities: Production volume is determined by the finite size of heritage breed flocks actively participating in our supply partnership and the seasonal nature of pastoral wool production. This creates a natural ceiling that varies with flock health and seasonal conditions.
Indigenous Greek Breeds
We source wool exclusively from three indigenous Greek sheep breeds, each with distinct heritage and fibre properties:
Boutsiko
A mountain breed adapted to the rugged terrain of the Pindus range. Boutsiko wool is characteristically coarse and exceptionally resilient, producing carpets with pronounced texture and superior durability in high-traffic environments. The breed is indigenous to Epirus and remains under conservation pressure due to declining pastoral populations.
Frizarta
A semi-fine wool breed native to Thessaly and Epirus, Frizarta produces medium-weight fleece with superior lustre and a refined hand. Carpets woven from Frizarta wool exhibit a subtle sheen and smoother surface finish, bridging the gap between heritage character and contemporary aesthetic appeal. The breed is declining in commercial value and is actively monitored by Greek agronomic authorities.
Katsikas
Named after the village near Ioannina in central Epirus, Katsikas is a dual-purpose breed historically valued for both fleece and milk production. The wool possesses a unique fibre structure balancing resilience with refinement, making it ideal for carpets designed for residential and hospitality settings. The breed is indigenous to the region and faces ongoing conservation challenges.
Why Rare-Breed Matters
Rare-breed production delivers value across four distinct dimensions:
- Biodiversity Conservation: By choosing heritage wool, you help farmers maintain endangered breeds. Our partnerships support pastoral communities in the mountains of Epirus.
- Fibre Characteristics: Indigenous breeds produce wool with texture, lustre, and resilience you cannot find in commercial wool. Rare-breed carpets have a unique hand-feel, colour depth, and durability.
- A Story of Origin: Every rare-breed carpet has a true story — from the mountains to your home. Verifiable provenance and a genuine heritage of conservation.
- Naturally Limited Production: Production volume is determined by the size of heritage breed flocks and seasonal pastoral cycles across Epirus. The scarcity is natural, not artificial.
Supply & Availability
Rare-breed wool operates under a supply constraint that distinguishes it from our standard wool offerings.
- Standard wool (Greece/Bulgaria): Sourcing is unconstrained. We maintain stable supply of commercial-grade wool for baseline production planning.
- Rare-breed wool: Production volume is determined by the finite size of heritage breed flocks actively participating in our supply partnership and the seasonal nature of pastoral wool production. This creates a natural ceiling that varies with flock health and seasonal conditions.
Allocation of rare-breed capacity is managed on a first-committed basis. Architects, designers, and hospitality operators planning projects requiring rare-breed carpets should confirm availability and lead times during the initial consultation phase. We provide transparent forecasting to ensure delivery commitments are met.
Technical Specifications
All rare-breed carpets conform to the same technical standard as our standard wool offerings:
- Fibre composition: 99% wool / 1% polyamide (synthetic backing)
- Pile height: 10 mm
- Weight: Dense, durable construction
- Construction: Double-face reversible (usable on both sides)
- Finishing: Standard edge binding; braided and piped options available
- Colour options: Heritage palette reflecting natural wool tones; custom dye matching available for rare-breed orders
Each rare-breed carpet is handcrafted in our Epirus facility and undergoes quality assurance testing to verify fibre integrity, dimensional accuracy, and reversibility. Documentation includes breed origin, production batch, and conservation provenance.
Care for Rare-Breed Wool
Rare-breed wool carpets require the same care as our standard collections, with particular attention to preserving the unique natural colour and texture characteristics of heritage fibres.
- Onsite cleaning services: Our team provides professional cleaning at your location, using methods specifically validated for rare-breed wool.
- Gentle vacuuming: Regular vacuuming without rotating brush heads to maintain fibre integrity.
- Professional dry cleaning: Low-moisture extraction only. Avoid high-alkaline detergents which can damage natural wool pigmentation.
- Reversible construction: Flip periodically to distribute wear — extending the life of each unique piece.
- Storage: Store rolled, dry, and ventilated. Protect from prolonged compression or moisture exposure.
